Pacific Power Source Releases New Version of Windows Power Source Control Software

140asx_with_softwareIrvine, California, March 2014 — Pacific Power Source is pleased to announce the release of version 1.5.2 of its widely used UPC Studio, Windows based power source control software suite. Already recognized for its exceptional control capability and richness of features, this latest version now runs seamlessly under all new version of the Windows Operation system with full 32 and 64 bit OS support.  Several new features and improvements were added in this version as well.

Pacific Power’s UPC Studio delivers a complete, graphical interface for the AC Power Source. It includes safeguards to protect the Equipment Under Test (EUT) and guides the user into entering values appropriate for the power source. In addition to controlling the AC Power Source and monitoring the output, UPC Studio can be used to generate and view “offline” simulation files. This detailed view provides the ability to observe the steady-state waveform and programmed transient before power is applied to the EUT.

An integral extension to UPC Studio is the Test Manager which helps the user quickly create and run Test Sequences and Test Plans. Test Sequences consist of one or more Output Sequences designed to execute a series of automated tasks that control and monitor the AC Power Source and other instruments. Test results are then stored in user-defined test reports. Test Plans manage and simplify complex tasks by allowing the user to link together a series of Test Sequences into a single test. A extensive library of factory developed common avionics and commerical compliance test routines for Airbus, Boeing, RTCA/DO160, MIL-Std 704 and IEC 61000-4 is available for use with UPC Test Manager

“This new version of UPC Studio Software further enhances AC Power Testing by placing the tools necessary to control all aspects of an AC Power Test System in the test engineers’ hands,” according to Eric Lord, Pacific Power Source’s Sales Manager.

“With Test Manager, you can tie together Output Sequences with prompts, user controls, Visual Basic scripts, meter controls and more. It stands out from other software options in the market by providing the operator full control and definability of complete Test Plans and reports versus just controlling the AC Power Source. In short, it saves time and money by providing the test engineer with a method of quickly and easily generating complete test routines.”

UPC Studio, Control and Manager are just a few of the utilities included in Pacific Power Source’s UPC Suite of software programs. UPC Studio including UPC Control and UPC Manager with Output Sequence Browser is free to customers with registration. Test Manager licenses are offered for a fee, as are all factory-written test sequences.

Pacific Power Source Releases Android Version of its Power Calculator App

android-calculator-app-headerIrvine, California, March 2014 — Pacific Power Source is pleased to announce the release of its new Power Calculator App for Android smartphone.  Formerly available only for Apple iOS phone, the Android version offers the same convenient calculation of current, voltage, resistance and power demanded by a given AC load. The application supports both single-phase and three-phase calculations, as well as displaying the formulas used to calculate the results.

From the conference room to the test floor, the application provides quick and convenient access to power related data and formulas.  The simple data entry process eliminates the need to recall and execute seldom used formulas on handheld calculators.  With the versatility and portability inherent in a mobile phone, the ability to quickly evaluate power consumption scenarios is now always at your fingertips.

From the power calculator homepage, the application permits the user to select either single-phase or three-phase power circuits. Variables specific to the selected power circuit, (i.e. voltage, current, resistance, kVA, kW), are presented on the second screen where the user is prompted to input two values plus power factor to calculate the results. In addition to the ‘Calculate’ button, a ‘Formulas’ button directs the user to various graphic screens that depict the formulas used to perform the calculations. A ‘Help’ screen is also provided that offers definitions, abbreviations and comments on the application that help guide the user through an overall informative exercise in the world of power electronics.

“At one time or another, most engineers have been trained in basic power concepts, but the formulas they use are most often those directly related to their area of expertise which may not be power related. ” states Eric Lord, Pacific Power Source’s National Sales Manager.

“An engineer determining the efficacy of a heat sink might be very familiar with Fourier’s law of heat conduction, but when is the last time they calculated Ohm’s law? Pacific Power Introduces DC Output Option for its AC Power Sources

indexIrvine, California, September 2013 — Pacific Power Source is pleased to announce the release of its brand new DC Power Output option. Packaged as an add-on module to many of Pacific Power Sources’ programmable AC power source models, the new DCR600-20 adds DC output voltage programming up to 600Vdc and with up to 20Adc of output current per unit.

Long a provider of precision programmable AC Power Source for development, test and production application of AC powered products, Pacific Power Source is now providing its customers with additional capabilities for testing DC products as well.

While general purpose programmable DC supplies are available from a wide range of suppliers, they have in common that they have limited DC voltage slew capability due to the amount of bulk storage capacitance at their output. This makes it difficult if not impossible to meet several avionics compliance test standards for DC Bus simulation which require very fast slew rates.  Since the Pacific Power Source AMX Series of linear AC power source have a wide bandwidth no bulk capacitance on their output, they are capable of supporting the much higher voltage slew rates required for these tests. With the addition of the DCR600-20 option, these AC Power Sources that have historically been used to perform AC power bus compliance testing will now also support DC testing.

Examples of Avionics test standards that include DC bus testing are Mil-Std 704, RTCA/DO160 section 16, Airbus ABD and Boeing 747B3. Pacific Power Source already offers the broadest library of AC Power avionics test sequences in the industry, it is now expanding this portfolio with DC test sequences as well.

“We are excited to be able to offer this greatly expanded range of DC test capabilities to our customers who have been asking for us to fill this void in the marketplace. This new addition to our growing portfolio of products allows our customers to get increased use and value from their existing AC Power Source investment.” according to Herman van Eijkelenburg, Director of Marketing for Pacific Power Source.

Pacific Power Source Launches Conducted Immunity Test Suite for IEC 61000-4 Compliance Testing

New Option Provides Test Sequences to Test for IEC 61000-4 AC Power Conducted Immunity Compliance

Model 360AMX Linear AC Power Source.

Irvine, California, October 2012 — Pacific Power Source is pleased to announce the release of a comprehensive suite of test routines specifically designed to test AC products for compliance with several IEC 61000-4 Conducted Immunity Test standards.

Most products manufactured in or exported to Europe have to comply with the European Union Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) directives. This covers both conducted immunity and emissions through the AC power grid. As such, products must be certified for compliance with harmonized standards issues by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the “CE” mark must be affixed to these products. Common AC Line related EMC tests are Harmonics and Flicker which are EMC conducted emissions tests covered by several IEC 61000-3 standards. Typically, the same AC Power Source can be used to perform both emissions and immunity testing.

Available as an integrated option package running inside the Pacific Power Source UPC Studio Windows control program, the IEC-AC-4XX option includes test sequences for the following IEC standards: IEC 61000-4-11, IEC 61000-4-14, IEC 61000-4-27, IEC 61000-4-28 and IEC 61000-4-34.  A separate option package is available to test to IEC 61000-4-13. The 413 option includes an independent waveform generator to inject inter harmonic signals into the AC Power Source output as required for this immunity test.  Detailed test reports in Rich Text Format are generated automatically at the end of each test run.  Provided test templates can be customized with the End-users Logo’s and company name as needed.

As an integral part of the UPC Studio software, these IEC test options are available for both the Linear AMX Series AC Power Sources – which offers superior performance – as well as the Switching ASX Series AC Power Sources – which offers compact size.  For high power Voltage Dips and Interruptions testing per IEC 61000-4-34, the 3060-MS Series AC Power source provides the required high current capability.

“We are pleased to offer this new capability to both new and existing customers of Pacific Power Source products.  This new option allows our customers to get additional use and value from their AC Power Source investment and also saves them a considerable amount of setup and programming time when performing these compliance tests.” according to Herman van Eijkelenburg, Director of Marketing for Pacific Power Source.

Target customers for this new EMC test option are EMC Test Labs involved with product certification and testing.  Also, manufacturers of commercial AC powered products that need to CE mark their products can use this option to check for compliance during early stages of product development.

Irvine, Calif., February 1, 2011— Pacific Power Source introduces the 390-ASX, the latest addition to its line of manual and programmable AC Power Sources. With 9kVA in a 9U chassis, the 390-ASX offers the high power density demanded in today’s AC Test Power market. This unit builds on the proven technology found in Pacific Power Source’s widely-used ASX Series AC Power Source family and delivers full-power capability in single-, split- or three-phase mode. The 390-ASX is ideal for AC test, frequency conversion, laboratory, and bench-power applications.
Like all AC Power Sources in the ASX family, the 390-ASX converts power by high-frequency pulse width modulation, resulting in cool, quiet and efficient operation. Utilizing the UPC-3 Controller with its powerful micro-controller to create a fully integrated test system, the 390-ASX delivers a variety of power conditions to the device under test. It also meters and analyzes all output-performance parameters. With quartz-crystal-stabilized output frequency, the 390-ASX is a superior source of stable AC voltage over the frequency range of 15 to 1,200Hz and output voltages up to 600V. The flexibility to provide both single- and three-phase outputs makes the 390-ASX an excellent choice for three-phase input to split (two-phase) or single-phase output power conversion.

All ASX Series AC Power Sources are equipped with Pacific Power Source’s UPC Controller, providing the industry’s most powerful and user-friendly operator interface. Standard features of the 390ASX-UPC3 include a 22 Waveform Library and Arbitrary Waveform Generation, RS-232 interface with SCPI, and 99 steady-state programs with associated transients for static and dynamic test applications. Available options include GPIB (IEEE-488.2) interface with SCPI, Peak Inrush capture and Waveform analysis, LabVIEWTM Libraries, and a wide range of Output Magnetics for worldwide testing. Another advantage of the 390ASX-UPC3 is its compatibility with UPC Studio Software.

Recognized for its exceptional control of UPC-equipped AC Power Sources, UPC Studio Software is particularly versatile because of its unique Test Manager feature, which helps users quickly create and run Test Sequences and Test Plans.

Users have long relied on Pacific Power Source’s ASX Series for its rated output power based on the most severe combination of input line, output voltage, power factor and temperature. With the addition of the 390-ASX, this model fills the gap between 6kVA and 12kVA previously found in the ASX Series Product line.

“The 390-ASX establishes new advantages with regard to power density, features and price,” according to Mitchel Orr, Pacific Power Source’s Vice President of Sales. “If you have the 360-ASX but you need a little more power, the 390-ASX is the model to serve your needs.”
